RSA Dissertation Award

A topical subject, which will have a major impact on patients and the pharmaceutical industry, was the outright winner of the inaugural RSA Dissertation Award.

Mathieu Michalet was presented with the award by Tarquin Bennett-Coles, director of RSA Interims, for his Master's in Bioscience Enterprise dissertation: The development of a solution to improve patient compliance with antidepressants.

Addressing what he described as "the leaders of tomorrow," Tarquin congratulated Mathieu on his outstanding work, which he said would create a wow-factor among pharmaceutical companies experiencing the consequences of patient non-compliance.

"With more generic prescribing and increasing emphasis on keeping costs down, patient compliance is seen as a key way of maximising potential returns on products with a long development span before patent expiry," Tarquin said.

"Mathieu doesn't have a background in bioscience. He's an engineer, and what he has achieved in his dissertation is to take a very topical subject and, using his well-honed project management expertise, he has broken it down into what needs to be done and devising the solution."

The Master's in Bioscience Enterprise is a one-year multi-disciplinary biotechnology and business degree course run at the Institute of Biotechnology at Cambridge University and the Judge Business School.

Forty different languages and 17 nationalities were represented at the presentation event.

With offices in the UK, the US, Singapore, as well as across Europe, Tarquin said he hoped that the relationship between RSA and the MBE programme would flourish, as graduates progressed in their careers around the world.

Linda Allan, programme manager said: "The RSA Dissertation Award has been a valuable driver for students throughout the year and has made an important contribution to their efforts. Mathieu's work was outstanding and he was a worthy winner."
